Character encoding JSON/RESTlets

I'm pulling down an item salesdescription via a restlet and returning that, as well as other data in JSON. What I am noticing is that the description has a trademark symbol in it, which is displayed correctly in NetSuite, however the JSON returned shows that same character as a\x84¢

How can I get the proper representation of this, and other special characters?
