Indexed pages dropped by 1/3.

The number of pages indexed by on our site has been building for about the last 8 months until about a month ago when it seems that all of our pages were in the index. However, over the last 2-3 weeks it has gone into reverse and over 1,700 pages have been dropped from Google's index. Nothing has changed at our end, what can have caused this and what if anything can I do about it?
