weird start/end date results in Task formula field

first, if i make a Task field have the default formula (not stored) of {enddate} then i get the Task's start, not end, date.

then, if i use the formula {startdate} i get the start date in edit mode but "invalid expression" in view mode

further, in edit mode, {enddate} gives a "2.7.07" format whilst {startdate} gives a "2007-07-02 00:00:00.0" format

i'm confused... can anyone help?
