Custom Field Data eNTRY

I created a customer field in the Customer entity.  I used free form text and set the size to 8 characters.  I named the field "Old Customer Number".  I wish to populate the field by either manual entry and/or import.
However, when I go the Customer tab, I see the text, but no way to enter any data.
What didn't I do correctly?
