Site Category customization

I am looking to enhance/replace the site category features built into NetSuite.

We don't host our stores using NetSuite, but I would like to find a way to use the site category functionality or duplicate it using custom records.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I want the following:

[LIST]
[*]A "inline editor sublist" (think of the current site category list) where you can select multiple categories per item, and check one as default.
[*]External IDs to match external platform
[*]Role-based access (so not anyone can add categories)
[*]URL Component if possible.
[/LIST]

Am I wasting my time with this, and need to hope an enhancement will be made?
