Editing a custom transaction body field on a transaction in a closed acctg period

I have created a custom date field and placed it on an invoice form.  I want users to be able to edit this field when the invoice has not been paid, regardless of whether the invoice is an an open or closed accounting period.  Is there any way this can be done?
