Store a Formula Value on Item Record

Similar situations to this have been discussed before, where you create 2 workflows in order to move the value of a formula into another field that can store value.

I'm having trouble applying it to my situation though, as both fields are on the item level.

I created a custom field that calculates the margin of each item based on the data inside the item. Then I want to move this data to a stored value field so it can be viewed in the item list. (when I tried view the non-stored value field, it says "Error, Field Not Found")

I'm defaulting the formula/non-stored value field to this, and then trying different workflow combinations but can't seem to get it to work. any thoughts?
