Direct Editing in List Views

Hi

I would love to be able to edit records, specifically Non-Inventory Items in a List view.

I have this enabled in Setup and I have created a custom view.

There is a message saying " Please select am item type before enabling editing"  the pop up help seems staight forward, but I still can't edit without opening the individual records.

What does the message mean by 'select an item type'.

I go the impression I could just click on a field and change it.

I can't seem to select an item (row) and selecting a column simply resorts the view.
