Item vs Item On Any Line?

I've searched the documentation and user forums, and I may be missing something obvious here. What is the difference between setting the criteria to "Item" vs "Item On Any Line"?

I'm running a custom search on transactions. Let's say that 5 people each made a purchase online, each purchase contained 5 items, and one item on each sales order is X. Will searching transactions for "Item is X" always return all 5 transactions? If so, what is the purpose of searching transactions for "Item On Any Line includes X"?
