item sales by day of the week

I am trying to write a search that will report the average number of each item sold on a particular day of the week ie Thursdays during a specific time period ie the last 12 months.

in addition to that if I could break out the results by time of day that would even be more beneficial ie 7:00am - 10:00 am vs 10:01 am-2:00 pm

I am not sure if the latter is possible but any help would be greatly appreciated.
