Custom Fields not showing up as criteria

Hello all,
We have a custom item field that contains a date.  We are trying to create a transaction search that will use this item field as one of the criteria.  Problem is, while the custom field shows up as a possible results option it does not show up as a criteria option under Item Fields...  The really weird things is another custom item date field we have that is set up just like the new one only with another name shows up in the list as a criteria option.  This makes no sense to me.  If they are exactly the same,
