Why "Check the Is UPC box"

This must be obvious I know, but what is the point of;

"Check the Is UPC box if the item Name/Number is a UPC code"

We do use UPC's in our existing Inventory database and when (if) we import our inventory into NS I'm wondering if it's best practise to use Name as our existing UPC's and then check the "is UPC" box?

I have looked in the help but, suprise I cannot find anything really except;
5.Check the Is UPC box if the item Name/Number is a UPC code.
