Unsubscribe: Customer vs. Contact

Can anyone explain why there is an Unsubscribe option for both a customer and contact records?


For instance, how would a customer record be unsubscribed?  I understand individual contacts simply click on "Unsubscribe" to remove themselves from future marketing  communications....
