This record cannot be deleted, because it is referred to by other records - deleting a saved search

when trying to delete a saved search (tidying up x-employees' "left overs") I keep getting the following message:

This record cannot be deleted, because it is referred to by other records

The x-employee was NOT an administrator or similar, but an accounting intern that created a saved search that I am now unable to delete!!!

He couldn't create any workflows etc so I'm stuck :(
