Access to Only First Level of Subordinate Records

We have some managers who should be allowed to see anyone in the reporting chain below them. This appears to be the standard functionality when assigning employee restrictions to the role record.

However, we also have some managers who should only be allowed to see employee records for their direct reports - not any of the employees who are below their direct reports. I haven't found a way to restrict a role or user to only viewing the first level of subordinates. Is this possible?
