Difference between 'related info' and 'participants' tabs?

I am wondering if anyone can explain the difference between the contact field on the 'related info' tab and the participants on the 'participants' tab on a phone call?  Is there any substantial difference or are they pretty much the same thing and it doesn't matter which one you populate?
