Workflow to throw client side error when changing the amount on PO

Hello,

I'm trying to prevent users from changing the amount of a PO after it has been approved using a workflow.  Our Purchasing department needs to change other fields on the PO, so the Lock record action won't work.

I've tried triggering an error message on after field edit of total, but it doesn't seem to be firing.  Does anyone else have any suggestions for client-side validation of a Total amount change on a PO?
