Customer Saved search results to a custom field

I have a customer saved search that sums all the transaction amounts for every customer.  I'd like to copy these transaction sums into a custom field in the customer record.  Since I can't use summary type in a mass update I hope that I can do this in a workflow.  I'm not very good at workflows so can someone tell me how to do this?
