Managing the item list

Hi,
We have over 55000 items - most of these are for reference/occasional order
This list contains products from a over 100 manufacturers; new items are added at a fast pace - currently about 1000 records/month.

Every time a manufacturer sends out a new pricelist, it is quite a task to keep this list up to date.  Using the NetSuite UI takes far too long. 
We need to add new items, remove/hide discontinued items and update current items - usually price changes, and descriptions

We will need some sort of customization.  suggestions and questions would be great.
