Filter inventory number/serial number based on item

I can't find a way to filter serial numbers on a custom record.

Our customer support reps enter the item number, and have to enter the serial number when creating a case.  The problem is every serial number is displayed and I need to filter it based on the given Assembly/Item.

I've tried using the source list/from options but there is nothing to select in the source from fields.
