What's the deal with Lead, Prospect Customer and Opportunities Status?

We're relatively new to the whole marketing thing and I'm trying to figure out why opportunities share the same status list as Leads and Prospects.  Can anyone shed some light on this?  I can't really see any use for the status field on the entity record.
