Add Class to customer records?

We have a number of industries that we do business in that we have used class to define on transactions.  Now that we are optimizing our customer records we would like to show and use the class field rather than creating a custom field for industry. 

Questions:
#1 - is it possible to use class on a customer record?

#2 - if so, how do I enable (or un-hide) this field?

FYI: Custom fields have posed a problem when creating a saved search, so we are trying to use as many OOTB (out-of-the-box) fields as possible.
