Website error with coupon code

Hi
We have created a coupon code. When a customer types the code in the text box and clicks apply

an error message appears in red saying

"This coupon code has expired or is invalid
Please correct or remove the coupon code and click Apply"

but the code has worked and the discount has been applied. I can see it
Discount (amount) in the order total

Anybody seen this?
