Possible to use custom columns on email templates?

We've recently implemented cart line messages, and store them in a column on the Sales Order transaction record.
Does anyone know if it is possible, and how,to add that information to an email template? (In our case the order confirmation email). NLITEMLIST doesn't contain the data.
Basically the custom cart line message let's the customer know an item is on backorder and when it will be in stock...they see it in their cart, but we'd like to have it as part of their order confirmation to reinforce the message.
Any ideas would be welcomed.
