carriage returns using setFieldValue

I'm having trouble with carriage returns when trying to populate a "text area" field via script. Using nlapiSetFieldValue(custbody_1, "Hello\nHello") should appear as :

Hello
Hello

When it in fact appears as

HelloHello

I assume this has to do with the properties of the text area field?
Can anyone shed some light on this?
