Search operators for dates

I am trying unsuccessfully to use 'today' in the search filter, but it does not seem to like 'on','equalto','is' or any other combination I try, and definitely does not like nothing as the condition is mandatory, and there is nothing in the reference guide that i can see. Any ideas?
