nlapiSetFieldText and nlapiSetFieldValue not working on a searchlist

I am trying to rollout a new Netsuite account with alot of customization and scripting.  I ran into the issue where my client scripts stop working when a dropdown box changes to a searchlist.  This is a huge issue because once I import my live data most of the dropdown boxes will become search lists and none of the scripting will run.  I need help fast.
