Scripts to Set Passwords for Customer Access?

I want to automate the password setting process for customer center access (the basic customer center - not My Account). 

Are the password fields in the customer/contact record scriptable?  In other words, if I check "Give Access" in the access tab, can I write a script that generates a random password, fills in the two password fields and sends an email via nlAPIsendmail that includes the password upon hitting save?
