How to approach, filter events by date script with custom date field

Created a custom record type and within that record type I have a custom list field which sources all events by name. However the list is very long and I wanted to add a custom date field that then would filter the results in my event list field.

I believe this can be don't but not sure what script to use (from the help files), any direction would be appreciated.
