'isinactive' of custom record

I have a custom record that I am trying to find out if it is inactive or not in a user event after submit. When I call the code I get null back, whether or not is inactive.

  var inactive = nlapiGetFieldValue('isinactive');
  nlapiLogExecution('DEBUG','Inactive',inactive);

Any help would be appreciated.
