Populate checkbox on field being populated

Hi All,

OK, beginners question Hope someone is patient enough to assist me.

We are currently populating a text field on transaction records via Web Services.  When this field is populated I would also like to populate a checkbox.  I have tried doing it via Workflows with no luck, I am sure this is very easy and was hoping someone could give me an example of how to go about this.
