Simulate clicking Save on a custom record form using a client script

I have a client script that runs when clicking a button in edit mode of a custom record form. Before taking other action I need the record to be saved as if the user clicked the Save button on the form. There doesn't appear to be a built-in function but does anyone know of any work-around?
