Transaction Form Custom Calculations

I would like the ability to calculate the total number of items on a transaction form.... 3 widgets blue + 8 widgets yellow + 1 widget purple = 12 items.

I would like for this to be in the footer, but it isn't a deal breaker.  It could be in the body or possibly at the bottom of the items column.

Has anyone used custom code in a custom body field or other field to make this happen?  Is there a "code book" out there that would identify the syntax of the fields I need to build the formula?
