Multi select field

I need to add a transaction column field that will allow me to select multiple records, very much like the serial number selection functionality on fulfillment or sales order records.

Is this possible somehow?  Seems like something people would have asked for a long time ago, but I can't find anything in the docs or in the forum.

Any help greatly appreciated.
