Campaign Email Domains & Email Domain Keys

It has been recommended by Netsuite support that we set up a Campaign Email Domain.
I have looked at the help for this and some threads here on the user group and I have to say it all looks confusing and ambiguous. Plus the help is very functional and lacks real assistance for less technical system adminsitrators (of which I am sure there are many) and no best practise e.g. what format of domain name should we use.
I have seen others make the same comments and as yet I have not seen anything from Netsuite to make it easier to understand and feel confident about in the sense of best practise not adversley affecting our campaigns & levels of response.
