Email Campaign Response ...Received vs. Opened

This might be a simple question...

What is the difference between "Received" and "Opened" for my campaign response?  I read the help section on "Tracking Campaign Responses" and came up with this...

[INDENT]You can track the following responses from campaign recipients:

Received – The recipient received the campaign but has not responded or purchased. This status is only applicable to non-email campaigns.

Responded – The recipient either replied to the From address on the campaign email message, or the recipient submitted an online customer form that included the campaign’s lead source or promotion code.

Purchased – The recipient made a purchase as a result of the campaign.
