I do this with a saved search alert, except I have it alert me when an item fulfillment causes the on hand count to fall below a certain level. I don't see why it wouldn't work on the sales order as well using the fields you mention. I'd use a saved search alert, though, not a workflow.

Thanks. Once you get to the check record, how can you enter the default values on the check? Does that have to be an entirely separate workflow? If so, how can I tell the workflow to only run if it came from the vendor payment workflow? Can one workflow span multiple record types?

Create "Set Field Value" actions to set the default values on the check(one for each value you want to set). Currently workflow does not span multiple record types. Thanks. How would I tell it to only trigger the set field value when it came from a wired vendor bill payment?
