assembly setup question

We have some different assemblies that I need some ideas for.

We sell some product where we can take a part and cut it to make it into multiple parts.  All parts could be bought from the vendor but by taking the bigger one and cutting it we can make more profit.  In our previous system any item in the system could be a parent item and set as a manufactured item.  That wouldn't stop us from still buying it.  And it may be after we have previously bought it we want to change it.  Is this possible in NetSuite?  Seems from my reading that you have to create the item
