How do I update a customer field when a transaction occurs?

I'd like to update a field on a customer record whenever that customer completes a cash sale. For the life of me, I can't seem to figure out how to do that in a workflow.

I tried creating a workflow on a transaction record type. It seems like I can't set a field value on the transaction's customer record. Does anyone know how to do that?
