Send Campaign Email with Custom Record Fields

I built a workflow to deliver campaign emails based off specific criteria and each email contains custom record fields (ie <NLCUSTRECORDFIELD>).  When the workflow triggers, the emails go out but the custom fields don't pull the values. 
Is it possible to use custom record fields within a campaign?
