Workflow condition - If Parent Matrix Item

I am trying to remove the UPC Code field from the Item record.

Barcodes are only valid if specified for non-matrix items, or child items...
so trying to prevent users from adding barcodes to parents.

Seems the only way to do this is with a workflow, but I can't select isParent or similar from the conditions field list.

Any ideas ?

Sounds like something that would be a FAQ by other users so surprised I didn't get any search hits.
