Creating a Workflow to validate field value is not duplicated.

Hi

I am trying to create a workflow to validate a field, within our sales orders we have a "PO #" Field, what I am looking to do is search all values held within the database of that field and return an error if the users input value corresponds with one already used.

I've been attempting it but haven't been able to figure out how to do a search of the field within a workflow?

I may be missing something very simple
