SetFieldValue in Edit mode

Hi,
My knowledge of Workflows is not great, so this could be a very basic question.

I have a simple workflow that displays buttons to move the a custom record across statuses.  I need these buttons to be displayed in Edit mode and when the user clicks it, the status should change accordingly but the record should remain in Edit mode for the user to make more changes before Saving it.  Currently my workflow sets the new value to the status field and displays the record in View mode.

Any ideas how to fix this?  Thanks.
