Can a Workflow write to outgoingmessage

Here's what I'm trying to do.

I want to offer a pull down menu, with a variety of pre-built messages stored.
The end-user simply selects one of these, and then the workflow writes this value to the outgoingmessage field where the end-user can then edit it as required.

I've got it all working, apart from being able to push the selected data into the outgoingmessage field as I cannot see this in the list of field options.
