Populate Values on Custom Transaction

I've created a custom transaction record with some pretty typical fields in the header (class, department). The custom transaction is tied to a project record. I want to be able to launch the new transaction from the project field, and populate the class/dept fields on the main line. I've tried doing this with a button and a workflow, but all I seem to be able to use for a custom trans is the "Go To Page" which doesn't let me populate. I've tried with a URL, but I can't seem to set field values using URL parameters that way. I've
