Trigger Workflow From Sales Order Approval

We default all sales orders to Pending Approval and have enabled the standard Approve button.  Certain managers review the order and then click the button to approve.  I'd like to trigger a workflow to send and email to the sales order creator when it is approved.

I've tried using the Approve Event Type, but it doesn't seem to work.  I've also worked with criteria based on the Status field to no avail.  I know this should be simple, but I need some help here.
