Numbers separated by commas

We have this on our invoice form: [INDENT]${item.quantity * 1000}[/INDENT]

Before today (as early as yesterday) this would display as 99,999,999 on the invoice, but now it renders a 99999999. Is there anyway to get it to look like the past? Did something change?
