Importing existing objects (eg. custom fields) into an SDF SuiteApp project - is it possible?

I'm new to SDF and possibly missing something obvious.  I have created a new SDF SuiteApp project and am trying to import existing custom objects into the project so I don't have to recreate all again.  Here is what I find (taking a custom field as an example)

New Custom field created in SDF (custombodyfield2)
- I created a new custom field in SDF IDE (Eclipse) and deployed it to the account just fine.
- If I remove the custom field xml from the /objects folder under the SuiteApp project in Eclipse,  and download the xml again from NetSuite, then all is happy, and I can, for example, 'Update custom object from account' and it gives me
