Project Status Trigger

Is there any way for the project status to change automatically when a certain project task is completed?  For example:

Project Task 1 is completed
Status changes to A

Project Task 2 is completed
Status changes to B

Project Task 6 is completed
Status changes to C

Barring that, is there a way to set up a custom field that can do this?
