importing and locations

I have locations set up for a test import of cash sales, but on the field mapping page, I can't set a default for location - there is nothing to select. So I added a locations column and added a location, but it returned with zero imported - an error on invalid location with the first row and unexpected errors on the others. Anyone run into this? I'm hoping it's something I haven't set up right with locations and subsids, so I haven't contacted support just yet.
